About Us: Krembo Wings is the only inclusive youth movement in Israel for children and youth with disabilities, providing weekly social activities for young people with all types of mental and physical disabilities together with their able-bodied peers. Established in 2002, Krembo Wings operates tens of branches across Israel, and welcomes thousands of young people with and without disabilities aged 7 to 21 from all cultural, religious and socio-economic backgrounds.
Our main purpose is to enable every child living with any type of motor, cognitive or sensory disability to take part in enjoyable social interactions between one another and their able-bodied peers — and become part of community life in Israel.
At Krembo Wings, we stand behind our conviction that all children, regardless of their background or abilities, deserve a social life, enriching activities to develop their social skills, and the opportunity to make friends.
Our program also develops the leadership skills of youth without disabilities, who volunteer as youth counselors. Our youth counselors learn skills necessary to provide enriching and empowering activities for children with disabilities while shaping them into young people with values and tolerance who live and love to help others.
We aim to open a branch in each city and town across Israel so that every child with disabilities will have a Krembo Wings branch near his/her home.
Branch Activities: Every Krembo Wings branch employs the same model: weekly activity sessions lasting for three hours, open to any child with any disability, designed to give participants a chance to have fun, make friends, and grow in confidence. Weekly branch activities include group games, arts and crafts, music and much more. Krembo Wings sessions allow members to expand their social skills and develop self-confidence. Activities are varied and adapted to appropriate age-ranges and abilities, and importance is placed on allowing members to make their own decisions during group games, which affords them some autonomy and independence from their families and caregivers – something that they rarely experience, and that most people take for granted.
Two able-bodied youth counselors accompany each member with special needs each week. The youth counselors take part in our comprehensive training sessions throughout the year, ensuring that they are properly prepared to work with youth with special needs.
We provide specially-adapted transportation to and from the branch for each member with special needs, so that no child is denied the chance to take part simply because he/she cannot reach the activities. A qualified professional nursing care worker is also always present to perform hygienic tasks as needed (assist with washroom visits etc.).
Our participants also have the opportunity to attend our annual Krembo Wings summer camp each year in August. The three-day camp stages special activities, day trips and outings, as well as events for parents and able-bodied siblings. It is often the only chance these children and their families have to go on holiday.
Our branches also take part in community campaigns such as planting community gardens, or taking part in community events such as the Purim parade, thus promoting the inclusion of individuals with special needs in community life.
What’s in a Name? Krembo Wings is named after a popular Israeli chocolate and marshmallow treat called “Krembo”, which because of its delicate nature is individually foil-wrapped by hand. Likewise Krembo Wings aims to realize the potential of each child and youth with disabilities by providing opportunities for social integration with one another and with able-bodied peers, while taking care of each person’s individual needs, and helping to spread their wings.
